Africanews is a French multilingual media service, formerly based in Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo. Budgetary concerns caused by the coronavirus forced the channel to permanently move its operations to a small newsroom at the headquarters of sister channel Euronews in Lyon, France. The news channel began broadcasting online and via television and satellite on April 20, 2016. The newsroom has 30 journalists and about 55 technicians.
Like its sister channel Euronews, Africanews publishes news and weather summaries every half hour. Programs are currently broadcast in both English and French; most graphics and on-screen captions are bilingual. The channel plans to expand and accommodate most of the population of the continents and plans to launch content in Swahili, Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese soon.
The channel is currently broadcast in 33 sub-Saharan countries and is accessible to 7.3 million homes via satellite and digital terrestrial television networks. Africanews is available in the UK, along with a host of other international news channels, via the NewsPlayer+ online video subscription service and alongside Euronews on Freeview channel 271 via the free Channelbox streaming service.
