C-SPAN covers field hearings in the House of Representatives, while C-SPAN 2 covers genital proceedings in the Senate. Although many hours of programming on C-SPAN are devoted to lighting the House, daily network programming begins with a political telephone call program and an interview with the Washington Journal from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM Eastern time.
The Washington Journal premiered on January 4, 1995, and has since been broadcast every morning with guests, including elected officials, government administrators, and journalists. The program covers current events, with guests answering questions on topics presented by the hosts, as well as questions from the general public.
On weekdays, C-SPAN2 devotes its schedule to “Politics and Public Policy Today” (21:00 - midnight for prime time on the East Coast, immediately replayed for prime time on the West Coast), which is a block of recordings of important events of the day in quick sequence. In the weekend program, the main C-SPAN programs are: America and the courts, which are shown every Saturday at 7:00 pm.
Eastern Time, newsmakers, Sunday morning interview program with worthy guests; Sunday evening interview program hosted by Brian Lamb with guests, including journalists, politicians, authors, and other public figures; and Communicators, which publish interviews with journalists, government officials and businessmen related to the communications industry and related legislation.
On weekends, C-SPAN2 devotes its Book TV schedule, which is 48 hours of broadcasts about non-fiction books, book events and authors. Book TV was launched in September 1998. Initially, “Book Notes” was broadcast from 1989 to 2004 in the form of a one-hour interview with a non-fiction author. Repetition of the interview remains a regular part of Book Television's schedule called Encore Annotations.
Other Book Television programs feature political and historical books and biographies of public figures. These include Depth, a lively, three-hour monthly interview with one author, and After Words, an author interview program in which invited organizers conduct interviews with authors on topics that they are both familiar with.
After Words was developed as a new type of program for interviewing authors after the end of Booknotes production. Weekend programming on Book TV also includes coverage of book events such as group discussions, book fairs, book signing, author reading, and bookstore tours of the United States.
