KING-TV (Channel 5) is a television station affiliated with NBC in Seattle, Washington, USA. It is owned by Tegna Inc. Along with Everett licensed independent station KONG (channel 16). The two stations share studios at the Home Plate Center in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood, while the KING-TV transmitter is located in the Queen Anne neighborhood.
Launched as the first television station in the Pacific Northwest, it was acquired and eight months later became the flagship station of Dorothy Bullitt's King Broadcasting Company; the company continues to exist as the licensee of Tegna-owned property. The station became an NBC affiliate in 1959 and has dominated the Seattle television market ever since.
Channel Five first went on the air as KRSC-TV on November 25, 1948, becoming the first television station in the Pacific Northwest. The station was originally owned by Palmer K. Leberman Radio Sales Company, which operated KRSC radio (11:50 am, now KKNW and FM 98.1, now KING-FM); The original callsign was taken from Leberman's company.
Channel 5's first broadcast was a live high school football game on Thanksgiving - the broadcast was fraught with technical difficulties, but local viewers were still impressed. Channel 5 was originally the main CBS affiliate and had secondary ties to NBC, ABC, and DuMont.
