KTNV-TV, virtual and digital VHF channel 13, is an ABC-connected television station licensed to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The station belongs to the E. W. Scripps Company. KTNV-TV's studios are located on South Valley View Boulevard in the nearby unincorporated community of Paradise (though with a mailing address in Las Vegas). The transmitter is on Mount Arden in Henderson.
The station, which originally belonged to the TV Company of America, Inc., was first broadcast on May 4, 1956 as KSHO-TV. ABC had previously been relegated to non-business hours for the NBC subsidiary KLRJ / KORK-TV (channel 3, now KSNV-DT) and the CBS subsidiary KLAS-TV (channel 8).
In 1979 KSHO was bought by WTMJ, Inc., the broadcasting division of The Journal Company. The acquisition made Journal the second television channel (and for the first time outside of the company's headquarters in Milwaukee). The station changed its call sign to KTNV-TV on March 2, 1980 (the suffix -TV was removed from 1988 to 2009).
KTNV originally sent its signal from a tower just outside the station at the intersection of Desert Inn Road and Valley View Boulevard on the four-fold border of the city of Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Paradise and Winchester, before moving later to Potosi Mountain to its current location at Arden Peak. The tower is a unique and visible landmark throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
On July 30, 2014, it was announced that E. W. Scripps Company would buy Journal Communications as part of an all-stock transaction. Scripps will maintain the broadcast properties of the two companies, including KTNV, and outsource its printing properties as part of the Journal Media Group.
The FCC approved the transaction on December 12, 2014. It was approved by the shareholders on March 11, 2015. The merger was completed on April 1, 2015. With the new sister channel KNXV-TV in Phoenix and the existing Tucson sister KGUN-TV, this effectively gives Scripps a monopoly for ABC network programming in the wide geographic area of southern Nevada and most of the state of Arizona.
