Oxygen (branded as Oxygen True Crime on the air) is an American pay TV channel owned by the NBCUniversal Television and Streaming unit of NBCUniversal, a Comcast subsidiary. The channel mainly broadcasts criminal programs and dramas aimed at women.
The network was founded by Geraldine Layborn and had a lifestyle-focused and female-focused entertainment format similar to rival channels such as Lifetime. NBCUniversal acquired the network in 2007; operated by NBCU, the network has increasingly produced demographic-focused reality shows and was relaunched in 2014 to target a “modern” younger female audience. After the network achieved success in the rankings with a programming block dedicated to such programs, Oxygen was relaunched in mid-2017 to focus primarily on programs to combat real crimes.
As of February 2015, about 77.5 million American households (66.5% of TV households) were receiving oxygen. In its current format, the network primarily competes with Investigation Discovery and HLN.
Private company Oxygen Media was founded in 1998 by former Nickelodeon executive Geraldine Layborn, talk show host Oprah Winfrey, media manager Lisa Gersh, and producers Marcy Carsi, Tom Werner, and Karin Mandabach (aka Carsi-Werner). [3] Laybourne was the founder, chairman and CEO of the service and remained on the channel until the sale to NBCUniversal. Oxygen's subscriber network was launched on February 2, 2000.
The channel's first headquarters were in Battery Park City, New York, near the World Trade Center. He was disconnected from the air on September 11, 2001; Regional news channel NY1, owned by Time Warner Cable, aired to all Oxygen subscribers nationwide until the studio reopened within a week of the attack. The network's operations were later consolidated at Chelsea Market, a former Nabisco factory on 15th Street and Ninth Avenue in New York City. Oxygen's operations are currently based at 30 Rockefeller Plaza as part of Comcast's consolidation of its recently owned NBC Universal facilities.
Initially, the channel started out as an interactive service focused on original programming with some repetitions (eg Kate & Allie) and had a black bar at the bottom of the screen (called a “bar” that occupies the bottom 12% of the screen). screen), which will display various information (the channel's website is involved in the interactive part); the method was cloned by Spike's predecessor The New TNN; the streak eventually disappeared.
Until 2005, the channel aired a limited schedule of regular season WNBA games produced by NBA TV. Later, the channel began to focus mainly on reality shows, reruns and films. For a time during the distribution of the talk show "Oxygen" broadcast reruns of "The Tyra Banks Show" with a week delay. The Breathe Yoga / Meditation / Exercise Program was the last first Oxygen program to air in the NBC Universal era, albeit with repetitions; it was canceled in 2010.
Campus Ladies, Bliss, Oprah After Show, Sex Talk with Sue Johansson, Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, Filmed, Girls Bad Behavior and Bad Girls Club, reality TV series were the main shows on the web at this time. Oxygen was launched with immediate transmission of DirecTV and arrived on the Dish Network in early 2006 during that provider's shipping conflict with Lifetime.
