The big question of the week is what horse is going to win the Darley July Cup and etch his or her name into Newmarket Racecourse folklore. The Clive Cox-trained charge won the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot when obliging at 5/1 and is likely to have jockey Adam Kirby back on board for this fascinating sprint down the July course, although there are lots of viable winners.

Enjoy The Princess Of Wales’s Stakes On Day One At Newmarket
The showcase race on Day One of the Newmarket July Meeting is the Princess of Wales’s Tattersalls Stakes, with this Group 2 encounter featuring a maximum of twenty runners and run over one mile and four furlongs.

Masar can lay claim to being the most outstanding horse in the race, with the Charlie Appleby-trained charge having proven underwhelming in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot although connections will be confident of an improvement on that performance.

Masar stumbled badly at the start of that race, causing jockey James Doyle to nearly fall off and he recovered well to run a competitive race.

Morando ran in the same race to finish fourth for trainer Andrew Balding, while Appleby is represented by two other lively contenders in the form of Ghaiyyath and Ispolini.

Day Two Features Bet365 Trophy And Falmouth Stakes
On Day Two of the July Festival, we get the chance to watch the bet365 Trophy and the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, with the latter being a Group 1 race that is run over the distance of one mile.

The Falmouth Stakes is open to fillies and mares, with the race forming part of the British Champions Series and we’re likely to see Hermosa, Laurens and I Can Fly near the top of the betting.

Hermosa is part of the Aidan O’Brien army of horses that will be descending on Newmarket and she was only just beaten in the Coronation Stakes by Watch Me, with Ryan Moore likely to be on board the three-year-old again.

I Can Fly also ran at Royal Ascot and the filly was a creditable third in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes, with Laurens also near the top of the ratings and she was sixth in a competitive Queen Anne Stakes which saw Lord Glitters claim the spoils.

The bet365 Trophy looks an altogether open encounter, with trainer John Gosden likely to have a string of lively contenders near the head of the betting market and he’s a trainer that needs to be respected.

Ben Vrackle could go off as a favourite to win this race and finished second in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, while Baghdad was the horse that beat him at Royal Ascot after previously winning the Qatar Racing Handicap at Newmarket.

Gosden might also be represented by First Eleven and Corelli, with little to separate the two four-year-olds and the former won a competitive handicap at York in May with Frankie Dettori on board.

Saturday Is July Cup Day
The Darley July Cup Stakes is one of the most prestigious races on the flat racing calendar and the winner is awarded £283,550, with this Group 1 race being run at a fast clip considering the distance is just six furlongs.

The going is set to be good after a hot spell of weather in the UK and its Advertise who could be the horse to beat, with Martyn Meade having trained his charge specifically for this race and he won brilliantly in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

Despite the horse’s price drifting just before the off, Frankie Dettori steered the three-year-old home and he’s likely to be well supported again with the Italian jockey almost certain to get the ride.

Dream Of Dreams is also among the leading contenders and that second-place finish behind the retired Blue Point in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes looks like a useful bit of form considering the winner triumphed twice at the royal meeting.

Sir Michael Stoute will be happy to see good or firm ground for the July Cup and we should expect this horse to go very close as a result.

Cape Byron is unbeaten during the current Flat season and the Roger Varian-trained charge obliged as a favourite to win the highly competitive Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot which was also over six furlongs.

Invincible Army was another to run in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the James Tate-trained horse finished seventh in that race, while Ten Sovereigns went off as the even-money favourite in the race that Advertises won at Royal Ascot but only managed to finish fourth.
