Euronews is a pan-European Pay TV news network headquartered in Lyon, France. The network was launched on January 1, 1993 and was aimed at covering world news from a pan-European perspective.
It is jointly owned by several public and state-owned broadcasters in Europe and North Africa, and is currently most (88%) owned by Media Globe Networks, led by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, chairman of the supervisory board. It is also a provider of live world news that can be viewed through the website, YouTube, and various mobile devices and digital media players.
In 1992, following the Gulf War, during which he consolidated his position as the leading source of CNN's 24-hour news programs, the European Broadcasting Union decided to create Euronews based on available information from a European perspective. The first broadcast of the channel took place on 1 January 1993 in Lyon, Ecully. In 1996, an additional television studio was opened in London. It was founded by a group of 10 public broadcasters.
