NDR Fernsehen is a regional television station that is aimed free of charge at northern Germany, in particular at the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, Hamburg and Bremen.
It is broadcast by both Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and Radio Bremen, although the NDR delivers most of the edition because they are larger than Radio Bremen. It is one of seven regional "third programs" offered by ARD members.
It was broadcast on January 4, 1965 as a joint broadcaster by NDR, Radio Bremen and Sender Freies Berlin (SFB). It finally took the name "Nord 3", later "N3". In 1992 the broadcaster's area changed when Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was included in the NDR after German reunification and the SFB left N3 cooperation in October to launch its own broadcaster B1 (now rbb television). The name "NDR Fernsehen" was adopted in 2001.
The channel is available in five different feeds for broadcasting local programs in the early evening. Four of the areas carry the brand "NDR Fernsehen", in the Bremen area only NDR NDS is available. NDR Fernsehen Hamburg (NDR FS HH) with Hamburg Journal.
NDR Fernsehen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (NDR FS MV) with Nordmagazin.NDR Fernsehen Niedersachsen (NDR FS NDS) with Lower Saxony 19: 30. NDR Fernsehen Schleswig-Holstein (NDR FS SH) with Schleswig-Holstein Magazin. The NDR brand areas usually broadcast a shorter news broadcast at 6:00 p.m. and a half-hourly news broadcast at 7:30 p.m. out. Like many other third-party channels, NDR television broadcasts the main edition of Tagesschau at 8:00 p.m.
The channel was initially only available terrestrially in its designated area, but since it became available on satellite and cable television, it has been available nationally. Many Danish and Dutch cable networks also pass the signal on.
