The International Basketball Federation, commonly known as FIBA (French: Fédération Internationale de Basketball Association), is the supreme governing body of world basketball. FIBA is responsible for managing international basketball competitions. The Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur, as it was previously known, removed the word Amateur from its official name in 1989, but retained the abbreviation.
FIBA determines the international basketball rules, the equipment and venues to be used, supervises the transfer of athletes between countries and controls the programs of international referees. 213 national basketball federations are members of FIBA. Since 1989, FIBA has been divided into five regions: Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
FIBA was founded in Geneva in 1932 under the leadership of founding members Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland. Two years later it was recognized by the International Olympic Committee. During the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, the federation announced James Naismith, the founder of basketball, as Honorary President.
FIBA has organized the Men's World Championship since 1950 and the Women's World Championship since 1953. Both events are held every four years, alternating with the Summer Olympic Games.
In 1989, FIBA opened its door to the participation of professionals such as the NBA players of the USA. With this decision, the Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur changed its name to Fédération Internationale de Basketball, but kept the FIBA abbreviation.
The Federation moved its headquarters to Munich in 1956, and returned to Geneva in 2002.
