Republic TV is a free Indian news channel launched in May 2017. Its co-founders were Arnab Goswami and Rajiv Chandrasekhar before the latter gave up his stake in May 2019, leaving Goswami as the majority shareholder.
Chandrasekhar was an independent legislator from the National Democratic Alliance who later joined the Bharatiya Janata party, and Goswami was the former editor-in-chief of Times Now. The venture was funded primarily by Chandrasekhar through his Asianet News.
The critical reception was negative. The channel has been accused of biased coverage in favor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata party and of publishing fake news. He was also found guilty of violating the rules of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India and the Broadcasting Standards Authority. This, in turn, led to censure; it also sparked a high-profile civil defamation case filed by Indian National Congress legislator Shashi Tharur.
