The foundations of Armenian public television began on September 5, 1955, when the USSR Council of Ministers decided to build 27 program centers and five broadcast stations in the republics of the Soviet Union.
Armenian television officially opened on February 9, 1957, when regular broadcasts began. In the same year, weekly news programs began airing, and later, with the opening of a news broadcasting office, news programs became regular.
