The A2 (Albanian: Autostrada 2) is the third largest highway in Albania spanning 46.5 kilometers (28.9 mi). By connecting Fier, the sixth largest city, with Vlorë, the third largest city in the country and the largest city in southern Albania, the highway represents an important north-south transport corridor and an important part of the Adriatic-Ionian highway. The A2 is also the starting point of the Pan-European Corridor VIII. The motorway consists of two traffic lanes and an emergency lane in each direction of travel separated by a central reserve. The national significance of the highway is reflected in its positive economic impact on the cities it connects as well as in its importance for tourism in Albania.
The A2 motorway has significantly alleviated congestion on the adjacent National Road 8 (SH8) during the summer season by allowing a faster journey time to the Adriatic resorts along the coast of Vlora and further south to the Albanian Riviera. In Levan, near Fier, the motorway connects the newly constructed SH4 single carriageway road to Greece via Tepelenë and Gjirokastër.
