A beacon of freedom of expression in the best islands in the world where anyone can come and talk about history, Akakū Maui Community Media is the place where people turn to learn how to produce and send a video about almost anything. The majority is local, all non-discriminatory, non-commercial, uncensored and unfiltered.
Akakū is the place where every resident of Maui Nui, rich or poor, young or old, can have a voice and show the diversity of our islands. A place to talk, show, tell, discuss, innovate, play, provide media literacy and civic commitment to people. Our mission is: "Strengthen the voice of our community through media access"
Akakū is an independent and non-profit public, educational and governmental public access television (PEG) station, governed by a local board of directors and designated by the State of Hawaii to program three cable television access channels (53, 54 and 55) serving more than 53,000 Spectrum Cable homes in Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
CHANNEL 53 - AKAKU GREEN / GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Akakū Green is the channel dedicated to Government and Public Affairs. We provide “live” hammer-to-hammer coverage of County Council meetings and repeat them several times. We cover all meetings of the Planning Commission, select meetings of Boards and Commissions, the Annual State Office of the County of the Mayor and the Public Affairs programs. Each meeting is available online to view on demand.
CHANNEL 54 - AKAKU RED / ALL ACCESS ALL THE TIME
Akakū Red is the channel dedicated to videos sent by the community. Almost everything presented by the residents of Maui County, regardless of the duration of the program or theme, will be reproduced on this channel. Occasionally, we will broadcast programs that originate in Oahu, the state capital, neighboring islands or other jurisdictions if they are of interest to Maui residents. Most Saturdays from noon to midnight are dedicated exclusively to programming produced in Molokai.
CHANNEL 55 - AKAKU BLUE / LIVE AND LOCAL
Akakū Blue is the local and live channel. This is our curated exhibition channel by Maui Nui. The "live" community events, most of the traditional broadcast duration series programs, "live" and prerecorded topical programs, talk shows, sporting events, special programs, "Democracy Now", breaking news and the best of Akakū are usually broadcast on this channel
