Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة (romanized: Al Jazeera); meaning: Ada) is a news channel based in Qatar. Although the channel first started broadcasting only with current news about the Arab world, since then it has become a network that includes other thematic channels.
The channel attracted worldwide attention especially after the September 11 attacks on the twin towers of the USA in 2001, by broadcasting the video footage and statement of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
Al Jazeera was first established in 1996 with a financial support of 137 million dollars from the Emir of Qatar. In April 1996, the BBC World's Saudi Arabian-based Arabic broadcasting channel closed after 2 years of broadcasting, and most of the channel staff moved to Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera started broadcasting towards the end of 1996.
The fact that Al Jazeera can be watched in the Middle East via satellite has changed the media scene in the region.
