WFLD, Virtual Channel 32 (UHF digital channel 24), is a live Fox owned television station licensed in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The station is owned by Fox Television Stations, a subsidiary of Fox Corporation, as part of a duopoly owned by Gary, a licensed Indiana station MyWetworkTV, owned and operated by WPWR-TV (channel 50). The two stations are sharing studios on Michigan Plaza on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago Loop and transmitters at the top of Willis Tower on South Wacker Drive in the Loop business district. The WFLD cable can be seen on Comcast Xfinity Channel 12 in most parts of Chicago.
The station was first signed on air on January 4, 1966 as an independent station. WFLD was founded by a joint venture of the parties, each of which fought for a license and building permit to operate on UHF channel 32. Field enterprises - owned by the heirs of the Marshall Field department store chain, as well as Chicago-based publishers Sun-Times and Chicago Daily News - were the main partner stations (with a 50% stake) and were responsible for the day-to-day management of WFLD; they were led by broadcasting veteran Sterling S. (Red) Quinlan.
Initially, the station operated on studio equipment located in the Marina City complex on State State. Channel 32 was named the “Station of Tomorrow” in a April 1966 Sun-Times article for pioneering technological advances in signal transmission. He also broadcast news programs from Sun-Times / Daily News. From the autumn of 1967 to the summer of 1970, the WFLD broadcast the last hour of the CBS Saturday noon schedule from 12:00 to 13:00 instead of the WBBM-TV station, owned and operated by the network (channel 2).
