KRIV, Virtual and UHF Digital Channel 26, is a Fox owned and operated television station licensed in Houston, Texas, USA. The station is owned by Fox Television Stations, a subsidiary of Fox Corporation, as part of a duopoly with MyNetworkTV and its KTXH station (channel 20). The two stations are separated by studios on the southwest Houston Highway (between Uptown and Greenway Plaza); KRIV is located near Missouri, Texas, in the unincorporated northeast Fort Bend County.
The station was first signed on air on August 15, 1971 as KVRL, operating as an independent station. It was the third UHF television station in Houston, after KHTV (channel 39, now KIAH) and KVVV-TV (channel 16, which lasted only 18 months). Four years after signing, in 1975, the station's telephone letters were changed to KDOG, the call sign selected by the station’s former general manager, Leroy Glauger. Another former CEO, Jerry Marcus, commented (after his resignation) that he had counted the corresponding calls during the formation of the station, since, according to him, channel 26 was rated as a “pursued station”. During this period, the station's slogan was: "Where every dog has its own day." During this period, the channel broadcast entertainment programs in English, including old cartoons, comedies and classic films in the daytime, as well as programs in Spanish, including telenovelas, films and television programs in nightly series. For the first two decades of broadcasting, Channel 26 worked with studio equipment located at 3935 Westheimer Road, in the Highland Village section of Houston, where the central H-E-B market is now located.
