Lofi Girl (formerly ChilledCow) is a French YouTube channel and music label founded in 2017. It provides 24/7 live streams of lo-fi hip-hop music accompanied by Japanese-style animation of a girl working or relaxing.
The YouTube channel "ChilledCow" was created on March 18, 2015, by Dimitri[a]. ChilledCow started streaming lo-fi hip-hop music on February 25, 2017, branding it as relaxation music for those working or studying. He was criticized by YouTube between July and August 2017 for using footage of the character Shizuku Tsukishima, who was trained in the animated film Whisper of the Heart (1995). The live stream was later reinstated with a special animation of a girl reading.
The music used in ChilledCow's live broadcasts was either released through the ChilledCow label or allowed to be used by another artist. In February 2020, YouTube briefly removed the channel without explanation, but reactivated it after public backlash. The original live stream, which was discontinued with the takedown, was 13,000 hours long, making it one of the longest videos on YouTube.
On March 18, 2021, six years after the channel was created, it was announced that the channel would be rebranded from ChilledCow to Lofi Girl. YouTube community posts explained how Lofi Girl became the icon of the channel and would fit the new channel name.
On February 2, 2022, the channel reached ten million subscribers. The post that was live at the time has been live since February 22, 2020 and has received more than seven million likes. The channel celebrated this by holding a party event in chat.
