WAGA-TV, Virtual Channel 5 (UHF digital channel 27), is a Fox-owned and operational television station licensed in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The station is owned by Fox Television Stations Fox Corporation. The WAGA-TV studios and transmitter are located on Briarcliff Road Northeast in the Druid Hills area in the unincorporated DeCalb district, close to Atlanta's city borders (but with Atlanta's mailing address). By cable, the station is available on Comcast Xfinity 804 and 1005 and on Charter Spectrum 5.
WAGA-TV first began its work on March 8, 1949. The station was originally owned by Toledo, an Ohio-based Fort Industry company that also worked with WAGA radio (AM 590, now WDWD; and WAGA-FM 103.3, now WVEE). colloquially called "wagga." Fort Industry will later be renamed Storer Broadcasting in honor of company founder George B. Storer. Channel 5 is the second oldest television station in Atlanta, broadcasting seven months after WSB-TV (then on Channel 8). Originally a CBS affiliate, due to the long-standing relationship of his sister's radio communications with the CBS radio network, Channel 5 also had a secondary connection to the DuMont television network from 1949 to 1956. He also shared the ABC’s affiliation with WSB-TV (which switched to channel 2 in 1950) until WLTV (then the new 8th channel station) took effect in September 1951. In the late 1950s years This station was also briefly associated with the NTA Film Network. Storer sold WAGA radios in 1959; however, channel 5 retained the suffix "-TV" before resetting it in 1998, but only in 2009.
WAGA-TV was the only VHF commercial station in Atlanta that has been on the same channel since its launch. Although both WSB-TV and WLTV - the predecessor of WXIA-TV (channel 11) - were originally broadcast on channel 8, the Sixth Report and Order of the Federal Communications Commission of the United States of 1952 reallocated the frequency in Athens and reserved the channel for non-commercial educational use. The University of Georgia aired Channel 8 as WGTV, now the television flagship of Georgia’s Public Broadcasting, in May 1960.
