WNYW, Virtual Channel 5 (UHF Digital Channel 27), is the flagship station of the East Coast Fox television network licensed for New York, NY, USA. The station is owned by a Fox Television Stations subsidiary Fox Corporation, as part of a duopoly with Secaucus, a New Jersey-licensed flagship MyNetworkTV WWOR-TV (channel 9). The two stations share studios at Fox Television Center on East 67th Street in the Lenox Hill area of Manhattan; The WNYW transmitter is located at the World Trade Center.
The station is available on DirecTV and selects cable systems in those few areas of the eastern United States that do not have Fox broadcast affiliates. WNYW is also available through cable providers in parts of the Caribbean.
The station dates back to 1938, when TV and equipment maker Allen B. Dumont founded the W2XVT experimental station in Passaic, New Jersey. The station's call sign was changed to W2XWV when it moved to Manhattan in 1940. On May 2, 1944, the station received its commercial license, the third in New York. He began broadcasting on VHF Channel 4 as a WABD with a callsign consisting of DuMont initials. It was one of the few television stations to continue broadcasting during World War II, making it the fourth oldest commercial broadcast station in the United States. The station originally had its own studios in the Dumont building on 515 Madison Avenue, with a transmitter tower on the same building. (The original tower, long abandoned by the station, still remains.) On December 17, 1945, WABD switched to Channel 5. WNBT (now WNBC) captured Channel 4 the following spring, moving from Channel 1, which was determined by the FCC. - selection from the range of VHF TV.
