WTTG, Virtual Channel 5 (UHF Digital Channel 36), is a Fox owned and operated television station licensed to the US capital Washington, DC. The station is owned by a subsidiary of Fox Television Stations Fox Corporation, as part of a duopoly with and owned and operated by MyNetworkTV WDCA station (channel 20). The two stations share studios and transmitters on Wisconsin Avenue in the Friendship Heights area of the northwestern quadrant of Washington State.
WTTG is available via cable on Comcast Xfinity Channel 25 in Washington, DC (cable channel 5 is occupied by alternative MASN feeds) and channel 5 in the suburbs of Maryland and Virginia, as well as on Cox Communications, RCN and Verizon FiOS 5.
The station signal is relayed at the W24ES-D low-power digital broadcast station in Murfield, West Virginia [4] (owned by Valley TV Cooperative, Inc.).
This station dates back to May 19, 1945, when TV and equipment manufacturer Allen B. Dumont founded the W3XWT, the second experimental station in the capital (after W3XNB NBC, the predecessor of WRC-TV). Later, in 1945, DuMont Laboratories began a series of experimental coaxial cable connections between the W3XWT and its other television station, WABD (now WNYW) in New York. These connections marked the beginning of the DuMont Television Network, the world's first licensed commercial television network. DuMont began regular network maintenance in 1946. Almost a year later, on January 3, 1947, the W3XWT received a commercial license - the first in the capital - as the WTTG. The station was named after Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr., chief engineer of the DuMont Network and a close friend of Dr. Dumont.
