The station first signed on air on July 1, 1949, initially broadcasting on VHF channel 4 as WBRC-TV (stands for Bell Radio Company, after Dr. Fountain Heights J.S. M.D. Smith III is also named the remote general manager of WAAY-TV from Birmingham.
