NASA TV (originally NASA Select) is the television service of the U.S. government agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). It is transmitted via satellite with a simulcast over the Internet. Local cable television providers in the United States and amateur television repeaters can broadcast NASA television at their own discretion because content created by NASA is considered US government work and is in the public domain.
NASA TV is also available through various cable, satellite, and over-the-top media services around the world. The network was officially established in the early 1980s to provide real-time video of missions to NASA managers and engineers. Since the beginning of the space program, NASA has operated a television service for archiving purposes and to supply media with video material.
The network broadcasts a large amount of educational programs and offers live coverage of a number of manned missions (including the International Space Station), robot missions, and national and international launches. The network completed its transition from analog to digital in late 2005 after the launch of STS-114, ending a period of double analog and digital broadcasting, although some cable television systems may have been analog prior to the transition to digital television in the United States. The satellite connection uses the DVB-S system for transmission.
