Times Now is an English-language news channel in India owned and operated by The Times Group. The channel was launched on January 23, 2006 in association with Reuters. It is a pay TV all over India. Until 2016, it was the most popular and most watched English news channel in India.
After 2016, since Arnab Goswami (the previous editor-in-chief) left the channel, it was generally ranked as the second most watched English-language news channel in India behind Goswami-edited Republic TV, albeit with the caveat that this latter has wider terrestrial distribution.
Along with the other channels of the Times group (Zoom, ET Now and Movies Now), Times Now is distributed by Media Network and Distribution (India) Ltd (MNDIL), which is a joint venture between The Times Group and Yogesh Radhakrishnan, a cable and satellite industry veteran, under the Prime Connect brand.
On November 15, 2011, in the country's largest libel suit, the Supreme Court upheld the Bombay High Court's order requiring Times Now to pay Rs 100 million. The channel had mistakenly published the image of Supreme Court Justice P.B. Sawant instead of someone with a similar name as part of a Provident Fund scandal, and the payment went directly to Sawant.
Times Now was accused of misrepresenting the facts regarding an interview of an alleged advance from the day before. Authorities from the Broadcast News Standards Authority asked Times Now to apologize and fined them Rs 50,000.
The National Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) reprimanded the channel for bias in its coverage of the Tablighi Jamaat congregation on June 23, 2016 for violating the Broadcasting Code of Ethics and Standards.
On September 6, 2021, Times Now was criticized for a report that used video suggesting that a Pakistan Air Force aircraft was flying over the Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan. The video was soon revealed to be a United States Air Force F-15 aircraft filmed by a YouTube aircraft enthusiast in Wales filming the aircraft inside the Mach Loop three months earlier.
