Shelter Island is located between the north and south forks of Long Island. It is surrounded on three sides by the Shelter Island Sound and on the fourth side by Gardiners Bay. You can reach by boat from Greenport to the north (about 8 minutes) or from North Haven to the south (about 5 minutes). New York State Route 114 crosses the island.
There were 996 households, of which 20.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female head of household and 34.1% % were non-families. 28.8% of all households were individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.75.
