Court TV is an American digital broadcasting network and former cable television channel. It was originally launched in 1991 with a focus on crime programming such as real-life crime TV series, legal dramas, and high-profile criminal cases.
In 2008, TruTV became the original cable channel. The channel relaunched on May 8, 2019 as a digital broadcasting network owned by Katz Broadcasting, a subsidiary of the E. W. Scripps Company. Court TV is also available through streaming services such as YouTube TV and Pluto TV.
The Courtroom Television Network, a cable television channel known as Court TV, was launched on July 1, 1991 at 6:00 am ET by founder Stephen Brill and was available to three million subscribers. Its original hosts were Vinnie Politan, Fred Graham, Cynthia McFadden and Terry Moran. The network was born out of two competing projects to launch cable channels with live court hearings: American Trial Network from Time Warner and American Lawyer Media and In Court from Cablevision and NBC.
Both projects were presented at the National Cable Television Association in June 1990. Instead of trying to create two competing networks, on December 14, 1990, the projects were merged. Liberty Media will join the venture in 1991. The first network logo consisted of a rectangle logo with the word "COURT" and the letters "TV" at the bottom with a line at the bottom. The second logo of the network operated from 1999 to 2005. The third and final logo of the network ran from 2005 to 2007.
Initially, the channel consisted of live court hearings, attended by presenters and reporters. It was led by writer Stephen Brill, who later left the network in 1997. The network became independent during the first trial of the Menendez brothers in 1994, and O.J. The 1995 Simpson murder trial. In 1998, NBC sold its stake in the Time Warner network. In the same year, Court TV began airing several original and purchased primetime programs such as Homicide: Life on the Street, Cops, and Forensic Files.
