DD News is the Doordarshan news channel, India's only 24/7 terrestrial TV channel broadcasting in Hindi and English. Prasar Bharati's board approved a proposal to launch a 24/7 news channel to replace DD Metro, which was being closed. This was subsequently approved by the Union Cabinet at a meeting on October 3, 2003.
Metro DD was transformed into a 24/7 television news channel, the DD News Channel, which launched on November 3, 2003. Its terrestrial coverage is 21.6% by area and 44.9% by population of India.
In 2019, DD India's international subsidiary channel became the exclusive channel for English news and current affairs from Doordarshan. Thereafter, CEO Prasar Bharati stated that DD News will be “100% Hindi soon” but has not yet been implemented due to the availability of content to air. A special feature of the channel is a Sanskrit news show called "Vaarta".
