SRF zwei (English: Swiss Radio and Television Two) is a free German-language television channel from Switzerland operated by the public broadcaster SRG SSR.
The channel was launched in 1997 as "SF 2" as a German replacement for the former second national public channel S Plus (originally launched in 1993 and later renamed Schweiz 4 (de) in 1995). It is the second of the three national German-speaking channels in Switzerland (the rest are SRF 1 and SRF info).
SF 2 was renamed SF zwei on December 2, 2005 to further differentiate it from its sister channel SF 1. The HD version was released on February 29, 2012.
SRF zwei mainly broadcasts programs aimed at a younger audience. It has a special focus on films, television series and sporting events, just like its Austrian equivalent ORF 1. Feature films and television series are often broadcast with German dubbing and original soundtracks.
From 1998 to 2003, a Nickelodeon brand programming block aired on SRF zwei (then known as SF 2) on weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm; there was a mix of Nicktoons and Swiss production, as well as live streaming with interactive games. In addition, on weekends in the morning a block was broadcast under the Junior brand; it was extended to weekdays beginning in September 2003, replacing the Nickelodeon block. It also ended in December 2006 and was replaced by SF tubii, which was renamed Zambo in 2010.
On February 29, 2012, the program was revised: the Zambo Baby Unit was shortened and moved to SRF 1 due to the SRF zwei programming being regularly interrupted for sports broadcasts. Additionally, The Simpsons was removed from its afternoon schedule due to poor ratings and replaced with a series of its own productions.
