KTBC, Virtual and VHF Digital Channel 7, is a Fox owned and operated television station licensed for Austin, Texas, USA. The station is owned by Fox Television Stations Fox Corporation. KTBC Studios are located on East 10th Street, near the Texas State Capitol in downtown Austin, and the transmitter is located on West Austin's antenna farm on Mount Larson.
KTBC-TV broadcast its first television broadcast on Thursday, November 27, 1952, becoming the first television station in Austin and Central Texas. Originally stationed in a small studio at the Driskill Hotel, [2] the station was originally owned by the Texas Broadcasting Company (from which calls were received), which in turn belonged to then Senator and future US President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife Lady Bird, along with KTBC Radio (590 in the morning and 93.7 FM). Lady Bird Johnson used the money from her family inheritance to buy KTBC-TV, she remained active with her radio station until she was eighty, which led her to become the first wife of the president, who became a millionaire on her own. [3] It carried all four major networks at the time: ABC, CBS, NBC and the now defunct DuMont Television Network. However, it was the main branch of CBS. In its early history, it carried about 65% of the CBS chart; NBC and ABC roughly split the remaining coverage in half.
In 1960, Channel 7 employees produced a film for the Texas Department of Homeland Security called Target Austin. The 20-minute film presents the scenario of a missile strike on the outskirts of Austin, as well as the storylines of several characters from the CONELRAD broadcast before announcing that it is safe to leave the shelter. The film takes place in Austin, it highlights several iconic places in the city, actors and a film crew from Austin participate in it: director Gordon Wilkison (from KTBC), narrator Cactus Prior (also from KTBC), actress Colin Hardin and El Rancho. restaurant owner Matt Martinez.
