WJW, Virtual and VHF Digital Channel 8, is a Fox-owned television station licensed for Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Its second digital subchannel serves as the owned and operated station of the classic Antenna TV network. The station is owned by Nexstar Media Group. WJW Studios are located on Dick Goddard Street (named after the meteorologist station, formerly known as South Marginal Road), northeast of downtown Cleveland, off Lake Erie, and the transmitter is located in the suburbs of Cleveland, Parma, Ohio.
The channel for the first time signed on air on December 19, 1949 the name WXEL, originally broadcast on the 9th channel of VHF. It was founded by Empire Coil, a military manufacturer of radio coils and transformers. In the early years, WXEL was the primary subsidiary of DuMont, and later became a secondary supplier of ABC software, sharing this affiliation with WEWS (channel 5). WXEL also carried a number of CBS programs that WEWS refused to broadcast. Some of the afternoon shows took place at Cinecraft Productions on Franklin Boulevard in Ohio. WXEL also had connections with the short-lived Paramount television network, and was in fact one of the network’s strongest affiliates. The station broadcast Paramount Network programs such as Hollywood Wrestling, Bandstand Revue, and Time for Beany. In the late 1950s, the station was also briefly associated with the NTA Film Network.
After the publication of the Sixth Report and the order of the Federal Communications Commission in 1952, the restructuring of VHF channels in the Midwest forced WXEL to switch to Channel 8 on December 10, 1953.
