KVOA, virtual channel 4 (UHF digital channel 23), is a NBC-connected television station licensed to Tucson, Arizona, USA. The station belongs to Quincy Media. KVOA's studios are located on West Elm Street north of downtown Tucson. The transmitter is located on Mount Bigelow northeast of Tucson. The station has two low power translators: K04QP-D (Channel 4) in Casas Adobes, Arizona and K28OY-D (Channel 28) in Sierra Vista, Arizona.
In September 1953, KVOA became Tucson's second television broadcaster and NBC partner, eight months after KOLD-TV (channel 13) had registered as a CBS partner. Although KVOA was an NBC subsidiary, it was connected to ABC until 1956, when KDWI-TV (Kanal 9, now KGUN-TV) went into operation. In the late 1950s, the station was also briefly connected to the NTA Film Network.
It was originally owned by Chicago advertising specialist John Louis Sr. along with KVOA-AM 1290 (now KCUB). It was a sister station of KTAR in Phoenix. In October 1953, KVOA Tucson brought its first live television event: a World Series broadcast.
The Louis broadcast empire eventually became known as Pacific & Southern Broadcasting, headquartered in Phoenix. However, Louis did not hold KVOA for long. In 1955, Louis sold the KVOA channels to Clinton D. McKinnon, who later took over KOAT-TV in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and merged the two channels into Alvarado Television. In 1962, the Alvarado channels were sold to Steinman Stations, the owner of WGAL-TV in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
