The AMA Supercross Championship is an American motorcycle racing series. Founded by the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) in 1974, the AMA Supercross Championship races run from January to early May. Supercross is a variant of motocross that includes off-road bikes on a dirt road with steep jumps and obstacles; The tracks are usually built inside a sports stadium. The ease of access and comfort of these stadiums helped supercross overtake off-road motocross as a spectator attraction in the United States in the late 1970s.

The first motocross race held on a racetrack within a stadium took place on August 28, 1948, at Buffalo Stadium in the Paris suburb of Montrouge. As motocross grew in popularity in the United States in the late 1960s, Bill France added a professional motocross race to the 1971 Daytona Beach Bike Week schedule. The 1972 race took place at Daytona International Speedway, on a track built on a grass surface among motocross. main grandstand and pit area. Jimmy Weinert won the 250 class and Mark Blackwell won the 500 class.

The event that paved the way for stadium-built motocross events was the 1972 race at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, promoted by then-AMA president Mike Goodwin and Terry Tiernan, and won by 16-year-old Marty. Bravery. It was billed as the "Motocross Super Bowl", which gave rise to the coinage of the term "Supercross".

The Motocross Super Bowl II that took place the following year was an even greater success, eventually becoming the AMA Supercross championship held in stadiums across the United States and Canada. Motocross and Supercross eventually split into different forms of racing.

Initially, each of the AMA Supercross races was promoted by different organizers, notably Mike Goodwin in the west, Pace Motorsports in the Midwest and Southwest, Super Sports in the east, and Daytona International Speedway, which supported its own race. In the 1980s, Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group (MTEG) took over the western region. In the 1990s MTEG went bankrupt and sold its Super Sports business to Pace, the main promoter of the AMA Supercross (Daytona remains the only stumbling block).

In 1998 SFX Entertainment bought Pace, which was acquired by Clear Channel in 2000. Clear Channel's live events division was disbanded as Live Nation in 2005, and the motorsport division was sold to Feld Entertainment in 2008, which is now promoting the championship. For the Daytona tour promoted by NASCAR Holdings (track owner).
