Rustavi 2 (Georgian: No. 2, “Rustavi ori”) is a Georgian free TV channel based in Tbilisi, which was founded in 1994 in the city of Rustavi (hence its name).
He is an associate member of the European Broadcasting Union. Its news service has bureaus and regional reporters in major cities in Georgia (Kutaisi, Batumi, Gori, Poti, Zugdidi), as well as permanent correspondents in Washington DC, Brussels and Moscow. The channel's independence has been questioned in recent years, with many speculating that it was biased in favor of the former ruling party.
It was formed in 1994 and since then has been in strong opposition to the government of Eduard Shevardnadze. The channel was closed due to the alleged loss of the license a year later. The Georgian authorities have made several attempts to shut down R2. Giorgi Sanaya, Georgia's most popular TV journalist working for R2, was killed in July 2001. Many viewed this as a political assassination linked to his Night Courier program and investigations into allegations of official corruption.
In October 2001, a security police raid on R2's office led to public outrage, and the ensuing massive street demonstrations against government pressure on independent media forced Eduard Shevardnadze to fire his entire cabinet.
By March 15, 2003, simultaneously with the launch of its subsidiary Imedi TV, Rustavi 2 presented a new logo, which consists of zigzag abstract two bronze numerals with gradient effects. Rustavi 2 was the main media source used by opposition leaders as a tribune during the November 2003 Rose Revolution. On December 28, 2009, to celebrate its 15th anniversary, Rustavi 2 adopted a new logo during a Christmas special edition.
