Canal Sur ("South Canal") is part of Radio y Televisión de Andalucía (RTVA), the public broadcaster in Andalusia. It was created by the delegated powers given to this region by a law of Parliament in its Statute of Autonomy.
Canal Sur consists of two television channels, Canal Sur TV and Canal Sur 2, a public radio network, Canal Sur Radio and Canal Fiesta Radio.
On February 28, 1989 Canal Sur 1 TV was launched as the public broadcaster of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia. However, this means that it was funded by the regional government of Andalusia. The Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) has been in power in the region since democracy was regained in Spain.
Since they control the Autonomous Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía), many have accused the regional government of making the station the mouthpiece of their party.
Canal Sur's news broadcasts were often critical of Mariano Rajoy (who was Prime Minister of Spain from 2011 to 2018) and his party, the People's Party (PP).
