The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization which aims to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations, to achieve international cooperation and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations . It is the largest, best-known, most internationally represented and most powerful intergovernmental organization in the world. The United Nations is headquartered on international territory in New York, with its other main offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna and The Hague.
The UN was created after World War II with the aim of preventing future wars, succeeding the ineffective League of Nations. On April 25, 1945, 50 governments met in San Francisco for a conference and began to draft the Charter of the United Nations, which was adopted on June 25, 1945 and came into force on October 24, 1945, when the 'UN has started operations. In accordance with the Charter, the objectives of the organization include the maintenance of international peace and security, the protection of human rights, the delivery of humanitarian aid, the promotion of sustainable development and respect for international law. When it was founded, the United Nations had 51 member states; that number rose to 193 in 2011, representing almost all of the world's sovereign states.
The organization's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in its early decades by the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies. Its missions have mainly consisted of unarmed military observers and lightly armed troops, primarily tasked with monitoring, reporting and building confidence. [6] Membership of the United Nations increased considerably after widespread decolonization from the 1960s. Since then, 80 former colonies have gained independence, including 11 trust territories that had been monitored by the Trusteeship Council . In the 1970s, the United Nations budget for economic and social development programs far exceeded its peacekeeping expenses.
