KVVU-TV, Virtual Channel 5 (VHF Digital Channel 9), is a Fox-owned television station serving Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, licensed for Henderson. The station is owned by a subsidiary of Meredith Local Media in Des Moines, Iowa-based Meredith Corporation. KVVU Studios are located at the Broadcast Center on West Sunset Road in Henderson (at 25 TV 5 Drive), and the transmitter is located on Black Mountain, southeast of the city.
KVVU was signed on air on September 10, 1967 as the first independent station in Nevada under the callsign KHBV-TV. The station initially operated from a refurbished Flying A gas station along Boulder Highway near Sunset Road, and its offices were housed in a modern office building on Flamingo Road. The station was on air from 11 a.m. to midnight and showed a movie schedule from the 30s to the 50s, several cartoons, westerns and several comedy series. In 1971, the station received its letter calls from KVVU-TV. By 1975, the station was on air by 7am and showed a large number of films, cartoons, other offline sitcoms, drama shows, and some westerns. At that time, Las Vegas was still considered a small market; at one point, it was the 150th market out of just over 200 markets. Las Vegas was the smallest market with four commercial television stations; there were higher-rated markets in which there were only two stations, and as a result they lacked programs from either ABC, NBC, or CBS. In 1978, the station was sold to Carson Broadcasting, a company owned by talk show host and artist Johnny Carson, who visited the station quite often.
Under Carson’s supervision, R-rated theater films shot in the late and early morning hours were often shot at the station. Although daytime (1:00 pm) and evening (9:00 pm) films will always be different, the same film will be shown uncircumcised in the evening and broadcast in censorship in the daytime, but not on the same day. The evening movie usually resumes at 1 a.m. almost every day. Movies with dubious content sometimes began with Carson's pre-recorded warning.
