1998-2001: early years
News24 was launched in October 1998 as part of Naspers' new internet strategy under the leadership of the company's new managing director, Koos Becker.
Arry Rossouve was named the first publisher of News24. News24 has focused on bringing the latest local news to its users, relying on electronic copy to keep them updated on international news. Within its first year, News24 became the largest news site in South Africa.
Originally based in Johannesburg, News24 moved to Cape Town in 2001 to become part of Russell Hunley's newly formed Media24 Digital division. The move was prompted by the restructuring of Media24's digital operations.
A restructuring soon arose, and News24's staff were cut from 30 to 18, with Douw Steyn as business manager and Cobus Heyl as editor. During this time, the IOL of Nezavisimaya Gazeta has overtaken News24 as the number one news site in South Africa.
