Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) (English: Radio Television of Malaysia), also known as the Malaysian Broadcasting Department (Malay: Jabatan Penyiaran Malaysia), is Malaysia's national public broadcaster. Founded on April 1, 1946 as Radio Malaya, it is the first and oldest broadcaster in the country.
After Malaysia was founded on September 16, 1963, Radio Malaya was renamed Radio Malaysia. It started with the establishment of Televisyen Malaysia, the television service in Malaysia on 28 December the same year. In 1969, Radio Malaysia and Televisyen Malaysia merged to form the current broadcasting department.
Radio Televisyen Malaysia monopolized radio until 1984, when free television and private television and radio stations such as TV3 and Best FM began to exist in 1988. It currently operates 6 television channels and 34 radio stations nationwide.
The history of local broadcasting in Malaysia was discovered in 1921 by A.L., an electrical engineer from the Johor Government. It began when Birch brought his first radio set to British Malaya. He later founded the Johor Wireless Association in 1923 and began broadcasting in waves of 300 meters. Similar associations were established in Penang (Penang Wireless Association) in 1925 and in Kuala Lumpur (Malayan Wireless Association) in 1928.
