Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) for short, known as the Spanish Radio and Television Corporation, Sociedad Anónima, S. M. E.34, is a state-owned commercial company that organizes the indirect management of public radio and television service in Spain. It was established in 2007 after the re-establishment of the former Public Institution Radiotelevisión Española.
The company divides its television and radio services into two segments: Televisión Española (TVE) for audiovisual services and Radio Nacional de España (RNE) for radio services, which are companies integrated into the Entity it previously replaced. Since January 2010, its operation has been financed by an item of the General Government Budget, which covers 50% of the expenses, while the other half is covered by an extra tax of 0.9% from telephone companies, an extra tax of 3% of open private television revenues. and 1.5% of pay television.
In addition to the media departments, RTVE also houses other departments with other types of activities, such as the RTVE Institute or the RTVE Symphony Orchestra. It is also a member of the European Broadcasting Union.
In fulfilling its public service function, the Public Authority RTVE is the real foundation of freedom and equality, with particular emphasis on the information and political participation of citizens, the formation of public opinion, cooperation with the education system, the dissemination of Spanish culture and a capital as well as nationalities and regions, the protection of the marginalized and non-discrimination of women. and contributing to its effectiveness.
The entity was established in 1980 by the Radio and Television Charter, which incorporated the Public Authority RTVE, the state companies Radio Nacional de España, Radiocadena Española and Televisión Española, dissolving the previous Autonomous Entity RTVE. The broadcast network, the Spanish Radio and Television Institute and the RTVE Orchestra and Choirs are integrated as joint services connected to the Entity.
