Welt (formerly N24) is a German free TV news channel owned by WeltN24 GmbH. It also provides regular news updates on ProSiebenSat.1 Media properties such as ProSieben and Kabel Eins.
On September 21, 2017, WeltN24 announced that on January 18, 2018, the N24 would be renamed, Welt. WeltN24 also publishes Die Welt, a conservative newspaper.
In the late 1990s, in the midst of the dot-com bubble, ProSieben Media Group, at the time comprised of two television stations (ProSieben and Kabel 1), whose programming consisted primarily of American films, sitcoms, and series, tried to take over German television. n-tv, then owned by Handelsblatt and CNN.
After a failed attempt, ProSieben Media acquired the German news feed DDP (now dead) and shortly thereafter announced the launch of its own news channel, merging the ProSieben news department. The channel was launched on January 24, 2000, at noon from the ProSieben Media headquarters in Interfering, near Munich. In collaboration with Bloomberg Television, N24 covered live financial markets around the world. In addition to managing its own network, Welt also provided newsletters to ProSieben and Kabel 1.
