RCTI (Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia) is an Indonesian free television network located in West Jakarta. Its programs consist of newsletters, sporting events and soap operas.
In October 1987, the state broadcaster TVRI lost its monopoly when the government allowed private television stations to broadcast. RCTI was officially opened by President Suharto on the morning of August 24, 1989 as Indonesia's first privately owned commercial television network.
The evening program was initiated by the Information Minister Harmoko. RCTI was originally broadcast as a local pay-TV channel in the Jabodetabek area and a year later acquired a nationwide terrestrial license. RCTI was broadcasting only foreign programs at the time because it was less expensive than programming it produced itself.
RCTI was originally jointly owned by PT Rajawali Wira Bhakti Utama (later Rajawali Corporation) and PT Bimantara Citra (later Global Mediacom, later PT Media Nusantara Citra (MNC), hence the name. It is entirely owned by MNC, which both own private Indonesian television stations Global TV and MNCTV.
RCTI currently has 47 relay stations in Indonesia and reaches 180 million viewers.
